Great question! Your instinct is correct, because BOINC does not allow auto-updating. This is a feature, not a bug, as it makes it more secure if updates cannot be pushed out and instead the users must actively request them.
(That's in stark constrast to something like your OS or AV software which should be auto-updating regularly.)
BOINC updates are usually just minor bug fixes though, and hardly ever essential. If they are, then we'll email you.
You can always download and install the latest version of CE at any time by clicking 'Add Computer' in the Toolbox on the home page.

PS. I wouldn't leave your PC outside. If the fans seize up with frost, or moisture gets in there, things could go wrong pretty quick. And someone might steal it... :)
